The Journey
by Sarah Steward
Illustrated by David Small
This soft cover edition of the beautiful picture book The Journey is truly the perfect marriage between text
and illustration. Through a series of diary entries, Sarah Steward tells the story of a young Amish girl visiting
Chicago for the first time - a story that offers us a totally different kind of attitude toward cities, an attitude
full of wonder. To this text, David Small adds his own story - a story of comparisons and contrasts. We see the
ride to the city, from buggy to bus. Then the city itself - but just as Hannah, the main character, compares
everything in the city to her home life, so also the illustrations show us the sharp contrast between city scenes
and country scenes: Hannah’s visit to the city compared to Hannah’s normal day in the country. Hannah’s love for
her home and family come through clearly, and the story is as much about her as about her journey. Despite her
decidedly unusual home life, Hannah is so clearly like any other young girl with her enthusiasm for new things and
her love for the old, a paradox that exists so comfortably in children. It’s truly an astounding book that I
enjoyed from the first moment to the last. |
