My Brother the Dog
by Kim Williams-Justesen
Fourteen-year-old Mattie feels like summer is passing her by since she has to babysit her four-year-old brother.
Because of their family's need for extra money their mom started working more, and Mattie has been called upon to
take care of Donnie, who has decided that he is a dog, complete with a red plastic collar and a leash. Mattie's
best friend, Livvy, thinks Donnie is adorable; Mattie thinks Livvy's brother, Nate, is the one who is adorable.
Just thinking about Nate makes Mattie's stomach do a little shimmy thing. It seems like Mattie always has to drag
Donnie with her everywhere she goes. When Mattie and Livvie go to the swimming pool with Donnie in tow, and he
falls in the pool, Mattie dives in to rescue him, but he has managed to inhale some water.
When Nate asks Mattie to go out with him, his friend, Chris, and Chris’s girlfriend, Angela, Mattie is very
excited and happy, but Livvy is just devastated. She really had a crush on Chris, and had visions of going out
with him on a dating foursome with Mattie and Nate. Livvy feels that Mattie is not supportive of her, and refuses
to even speak to her. Will Mattie have to choose between her best friend and the gorgeous Nate?
It seems like everything has gone terribly wrong in Mattie's life when Donnie is taken to the hospital with
pneumonia. Mattie blames herself... she's sure that it is her fault as a result of the swimming pool accident.
Williams-Justesen keeps the action lively and the interest level high in this well written story of teen angst
and the little brother syndrome. Teens will be able to relate to Mattie's conflicting feelings about her parents,
her brother, her best friend. and her new love interest. This would be a great addition to the beach-bag for
exciting summer reading. |
