One Potato, Two Potato
by Cynthia DeFelice
Illustrated by Andrea U'Ren
This is a wonderful version of the traditional magic pot story. In this story, Mr. and Mrs. O’Grady live a simple but
happy life. They share one chair, one raggedy blanket, and one worn out winter coat. Between both of them they eat one
potato a day. One day, when Mr. O’Grady is out digging up the last potato, he uncovers a huge, black pot. The couple
is amazed to discover that the pot doubles whatever is put into it. Soon, they have enough candles to last the winter,
enough potatoes to keep from starving, and enough money to buy what they need. However, there is a new problem to solve
when Mrs. O’Grady falls into the pot!
Despite their newfound ability to have as much as they want, the O’Grady’s do not become greedy. Once they have all
they need, they bury the pot for someone else to find.
This is a well told tale and DeFelice’s interpretation is gentle and heartwarming. This is a great addition to any
picture book library. |
