Priscilla and the Splish-Splash Surprise
by Nathaniel Hobbie
Illustrated by Jocelyn Hobbie
Priscilla and the Splish-Splash Surprise is the second outing with young Priscilla
by this sibling team of author and illustrator. Priscilla is more than a bit disgruntled
about a dismal series of grey, rainy days. She exhausts all the indoor activities that
her active imagination can invent and decides to try a rain-stopping dance. The dance
doesn't turn out quite as she hoped, but Priscilla finds an amazing adventure just the
same. Okay, I have to admit, when I saw the cover of this book, I thought - oh, my, how
very, very cute. How very extremely cute. So, the book spent longer on my "to read" stack
than it should have because as soon as I cracked the cover, I was enchanted. The wonderful
story reads a bit like someone dropped Olivia in the middle of Dr. Seuss - as it's filled
with imagination, sass, and wonderful meter and rhyme. And the illustrations remind me of
Seuss meets the rainbow since every spread is a burst of color. The illustrations are
filled with action, whimsy and humor. It's a great read-aloud and with the wonderful
eye-catching illustrations, would make a lovely preschool library story for those rainy
reading days. |
