Psalms 23:
A Child's Story
by Patricia Thompson
Explaining theological concepts to children can often be overwhelming. Patricia Thompson
has found a way to do so in her picture book, Psalms 23: A Child's Story. The
23rd Psalm, especially in the heraldic language of the King James version, is sometimes
difficult for adults to grasp. What does it mean to "lie down in green pastures" or to
walk "the path of righteousness"? Thompson explains these ideas as the comforts of a bed
and food and drink and the path of goodness and love.
The Psalms were written in the time of the Jewish King David, when the reference to
the Lord in that well-known line, "The Lord is my shepherd," was about God. Thompson,
like many Christians, considers this psalm and others to apply to Jesus as well. Therefore,
Thompson has fixed Jesus on the first page with that famous line. Jesus is the comforter.
Jesus is the soul restorer. Jesus walks beside the child always. Some parents may be
theologically sensitive to this rendering of the Psalms.
Still, this book is an excellent way to begin a study of scripture and prayer with a
young child. Its language is clear and simple for young minds to understand, and would
be a good addition to a young child's Christian library. |
