Rain Rain Rivers
Author/Illustrator: Uri Shulevitz
Rain Rain Rivers is a lovely poem, illustrated with soft watercolor and ink pictures that depict the grayness
of a rainy day well. It’s the kind of poem that carries a sweetness that can make it soothing when read to a tiny
child. As a read aloud, the text is lovely and lyrical and really emphasizes the wonder, the size, and the
fleeting nature of rain. Rain comes, it changes everything while it’s here, and then it is done. The illustrations
are definitely a piece of a different time in children’s book illustration (the copyright for this book is 1969),
and they remind me of the classic books I tried to interest my child in during her preschool years. She would
listen, but she wouldn’t look, and these wonderful classics were never the book brought to me during the "choose
your own story" moments. I’m glad the book has been reprinted to share with children today, but I suspect it would
find a warmer reception with young school-aged children than with preschoolers who tend to love bright over soft.
My six year old is just now reaching the age to appreciate this style of art - she said the illustrations were
beautiful. |
