Regular Lu

by Robin Nelson

Regular Lu was just a regular mouse, that's all that he was. Lu wished that he could be King so that everyone would bow to his every whim, and suddenly he was wearing a robe and a crown. Noble King Lu would never need to say "excuse me" or "please" again.

Then the animals came and began to complain. The king was supposed to make everyone else happy. The Dalmatian wanted the cheetah to turn blue, and have no spots, while the cheetah wanted the Dalmatian to turn red. The crocodile wanted to live in the trees, and no one was happy with the way they were.

How lonely Lu was with his new position. How was he supposed to make everyone happy? The responsibility was overwhelming. Oh, how wonderful life had been when he was just regular Lu.

This story that helps children realize the possible impact of their decisions, and how wonderful it is to just be yourself, is destined to be a classic right along with The Little Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings. Robin Nelson's beautifully rendered and intricately detailed illustrations bring the story to life. This wonderful story told in catchy rhymed verse is just the thing to share with the little ones at family reading time. It gives parents a wonderful opening for self-esteem discussions.
