Vegetable Dreams - Huerto Sonado
(Bilingual in English/Spanish)
by Dawn Jeffers
Illustrated by Claude Schneider
Translation by Eida de la Vega
When Erin tells her parents about her dream of having a vegetable garden, their response is that she is too young
and not ready for that responsibility. As she sits in the back-yard swing with tears running down her face, her
kindly neighbor, Mr. Martinez, offers to share a garden with her. If her parents give their permission, Erin can
help to plan, plant and work on the garden and learn all about raising a garden from Mr. Martinez.
Erin's parents agree to the plan. The story follows the slow progress of the garden over the summer. There is
a growing friendship between Erin and Mr. Martinez, and the joy of learning new things and the magic of friendship
are stressed.
The full color pastel illustrations by Claude Schneider accompanying each page of text reflect the progress of
the story and really bring it to life. The story is told with English at the top of the page and Spanish on the
bottom half making it perfect for teaching either language to a child.
A page of English/Spanish vocabulary words follow the text. This lively story would be a terrific addition to
any school language curriculum or for home-school students. |
