Waiting for Gregory
by Kimberly Willis Holt
Illustrated by Gabi Swiatkowska
Iris is eagerly waiting for the birth of her cousin Gregory, but when she begins asking exactly
when he'll arrive, she gets some unusual answers. Will Gregory be traveling by stork or growing
in the garden? While her relatives and neighbors spin myths, young Iris is dubious - do they
really know how Gregory will come? And how is a little girl to wait through the long seasons
without him? Iris' plans for the wonderful things she will share with her cousin are bittersweet
as the seasons pass and she faces that she won't be doing them with Gregory this year. The
gorgeous mixed media illustrations use unexpected details to point up how outlandish the
stories that Iris hears really are. It's not until Iris is finally holding her little
cousin that the illustrations settle into reality - gorgeous, sensitive reality. When
I read this book to my 6-year-old daughter, she said, "This one really should get an award
- the writing is beautiful and I could look at the pictures all day." I have to admit, I
can't say it much better than that. |
