The Witch on Oak Street
And Other Adventures With Debbie Folino
by Major Mitchell
Illustrated by Karen Borrelli
Johnny Parker and Harley Johnson are convinced the old lady that lives on Oak Street is a real live witch who eats
kids. Debbie Folino and her friend, Sally, take the dare to trick-or-treat at the witch's house on Halloween, just
to prove that she's not a real witch, and of course, show how brave they are. Things go terribly wrong...and Debbie
ends up all alone with an injured ankle when her frightened friends run off and leave her to face the witch by herself.
Eighty-year-old Sara Baker turns out to be the mentor who changes the life of nine year old Debbie. She guides her
through the trials of growing, loving, sharing, and even death, at her kitchen table with plates of homemade cookies.
Mrs. Baker introduces Debbie to Robert Curtis, a boy who becomes very important to her. Sara also helps Debbie
and her family to know an even more important person...Jesus Christ.
The adventures of Debbie Folino are compellingly readable stories of the personal growth of this young girl
through the everyday things that happen to her, her friends and her family.
When Debbie injures her arm pitching in a softball game, she is very upset...and very difficult for her family
and friends to live with, until she begins to help another girl learn to pitch.
Debbie learns to accept a new baby into the family, when she was sure that she didn't want a bratty sibling at
all. Several other stories show Debbie's personal growth and budding maturity as Major Mitchell tells us about her
life, and the changes because of her belief in Jesus and the decisions she makes to help others and make new friends.
The line drawings by Karen Borrelli illustrate the various stories and help bring them to life.
These wonderful, inspirational stories are full of action and told with great humor. Mitchell is very good at
creating characters and plotting stories we will long remember, and want to read over and over. |
