The Year of the Dog
by Grace Lin
Grace, a Taiwanese/American girl, tells us her story in a lively novel with cultural overtones
as we follow her through The Year of the Dog. Grace and her sisters are the only
Taiwanese children in their school, until Melody enrolls. Grace and Melody become fast
friends and their everyday lives illuminate the differences between American and Taiwanese
cultures. What an exciting way to learn about another culture as the girls go through
their days as American schoolgirls.
The chapters are laced with stories the parents tell about the way things were done in
Taiwan and their own experiences. Did you ever hear of a "Red Egg Party?" How about "Ugly
Vegetables that look like warty frogs?"
Grace Lin writes with a wonderful sense of humor about fully developed and sympathetic
characters. Her whimsical drawings highlight the stories that are based on the author's
childhood and her life. Lin has definitely found her niche.... I'm sure that we can
expect many more children's novels from this talented writer. |
