Christine Kringle

by Lynn Brittney
Illustrated by Brita Granstrom

Coming up with a unique Christmas story is next to impossible these days, yet Lynn Brittney has written an endearing Christmas tale with a very different perspective. Christine Kringle is the only child of Kriss Kringle, the Santa Claus of the United States. But Kriss is not the only Santa Claus. Each year, all the gift bringers of the world attend the Yule Dynasty Conference to discuss the business of Christmas. It is at this wonderful conference that Kriss plans to ask the Dynasty for permission to allow Christine to inherit the role of gift bringer when he retires, as it is traditionally a male job. But the conference comes to a screeching halt when a small town in England, Plinkbury, decides to ban Christmas for good. Determined to save Christmas and ensure that she will become a female gift bringer, Christine, along with some other young Yule Dynasty friends, hatch a plan to bring Christmas back to Plinkbury. With an unforgettable cast of characters from around the world, this book takes you on a wonderful romp through the unknown business side of Santa’s world.

The only drawback I found to this highly entertaining book is that it does play into some unfortunate ethnic stereotypes. Babbo Natale of Italy resembles a mob boss a little more frequently than a Santa figure. Chinese and Japanese gift bringers are, naturally, against a female successor to the Kringle line. Also, while in Plinkbury, the children assume that a shopkeeper named Mr. Patel is not Christian. These things play a minor role in the story, but in a politically correct world, I found them a little distracting and disappointing. Underneath these stereotypes is a very rich and engaging story that children should heartily enjoy. I certainly did.
