Dakota's Mom Goes to the Hospital
by Annie Theil, Ph.D.
Dakota
Greenblatt's world was great when Mom was home. Mom woke her
up every morning, fixed the best breakfast, sent her off to school
on time and was there when she got home. But now, Dakota's
mother is sick, and has had to go to the hospital to get well.
Everything is different...Dad just doesn't do things the same way
as Mom did.
This is a difficult
situation for a child to learn to accept. This book lets a child
know that it is OK for a parent to go to a hospital, that sometimes,
it is necessary for them to get well. Theil points out that sad,
mad, confused and scared are normal emotions to feel and that kids should
talk to the other parent, grandparent, teacher, or someone else
that can be trusted. There is a checklist at the end of the book
listing ten things for a child to do when someone they love is sick.
Children
need to learn to cope with difficult situations and the Playdate
Kids series of books give practical advice for parents to help them.
Daycare and pre-schools should have a copy of this sensitive
book. It is great for family time read-aloud or bedtime.
