Ellie McDoodle:
Have Pen, Will Travel
by Ruth McNally Barshaw
Illustrated by the author
When this book arrived at my house, my seven-year-old took one look and ran off with it. For the next couple days,
I spotted her frequently curled up with this unique book. And every now and then, she would pop up to read me one
of Ellie’s jokes or show me a drawing from the book. When I finally got my turn to read Ellie, I discovered
this charming book is a bit like a graphic novel, since it’s filled with whimsical line drawings of Ellie’s
adventures on a camping trip with not-so-well-liked relatives. It’s also a lot like reading someone’s journal as
we get Ellie’s moment-by-moment impressions of her cousins, her trip, and the cute boy she meets.
Though all the drawings are simple and fun, they still reveal much about the personality of the people
surrounding Ellie and her feelings about them as well. I particularly enjoyed the evolving look of Er-Ick, monster
boy cousin. Because the book is a mix of text and drawings, it’s a blinding fast read - perfect for kids who
struggle with longer, denser text but don’t want to settle for a "baby book." I found the story so delightful, I
had to ask the author if we would be seeing more of Ellie McDoodle - and we will! I know I won’t be the only one
looking forward to that sequel. |
