The Life and Times of Lilly the Lash
The Garden Gathering
by Julie Woik
Illustrated by Marc Tobin
This is the first in a picture book series about Lilly the Lash, an eyelash / fairy who teaches self-esteem and
moral lessons. She is introduced with, "She once was an eyelash, who lived on my face, who guided my soul with
her goodness and grace." The book is written in rhyme but the story would greatly benefit if Woik would free
herself from the confines of stilted rhymes and just write the story in free verse or prose. I also couldn't
understand why Lilly is an eyelash rather than just a fairy. A wise and loving eyelash seemed a little
far-fetched even for a picture book.
In this particular story, a young sunflower is concerned that she's too fat. Lilly tricks her into realizing
"how foolish she's been" for not loving herself as she is when she makes a fast spider downplay his soccer
abilities. The sunflower realizes the spider has real talent and shouldn't hide it. Voila, the spider realizes
that he could easily be the MVP, and the sunflower realizes she was silly not to see her worth. While it's a
nice sentiment, I don't believe that even young children will be fooled into thinking it's just that easy to
feel good about yourself.
The real strength of this book is the illustrations by Marc Tobin. They are simply beautiful. He has
envisioned Lilly as a blonde, tussled-hair fairy with eyelash wings. (Her head looks suspiciously like the
head shot of the author.) The quality of the book itself is also admirable. The binding is strong and the paper
is thick and glossy. I definitely got more out of holding the book and looking at the wonderful artwork than
from the superficial treatment of a very serious subject. |
