The Lycan Journal

by Chad Long

The Lycan Journal is a slim volume about the journey of Gordo, a thirteen-year-old boy, to find a cure for his father who has been poisoned by the scratch of a werewolf.

Gordo is a clever and intelligent boy, and he finds out his father picked up this particular werewolf in Greece. The werewolf was on the trail of Allie Zabel, and he intended to kill her to retrieve an artifact that is the key to the silver treasure of the werewolves.

You see, werewolves are not at all harmed by silver. They've perpetuated this myth because silver is their greatest treasure. They want you to shoot it at them, throw it at them, and try to poison them with it! It fails, and they gain more treasure!

But their vault of silver has been locked away from them for many, many years and the only key is in the hands of Allie Zabel.

So Gordo goes to find her, and in finding her, finds the key. Together they go to the hidden world of the werewolves, and there they find the treasure.

Along the way they are helped by Hank, an itinerant helicopter pilot, and later on the island of the werewolves by Dusty, a half-breed boy.

The story is generally well-told and interesting. Children like tales of boys and girls who take on the adult world and win, and this is just such a tale.

There is one consistent grammatical error, the use of the word "lied" as the past-tense for lie as in lying down. Other than that, the book has its own sweet charm.
