Mayflower Treasure Hunt:
A to Z Mysteries
by Ron Roy
Illustrated by John Steven Gurney
My third grader is a huge fan of anything by Ron Roy, but especially the A to Z Mysteries. When she heard he
was continuing the mysteries past Z - she giggled with glee. The new books in the series are longer, with more
complex plots - so they are terrific for luring kids into reading longer books. The reading level posted on
Amazon is 9 - 12 and posted at Random House as 6 - 9. My daughter had no trouble with the reading at seven,
so don't be afraid to pick the book up for any child who can handle chapters. Mayflower Treasure Hunt
featured the familiar, appealing trio: Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose, in Plymouth, Massachusetts at Thanksgiving.
While touring the Mayflower II, the kids hear about a historical mystery - a necklace stolen from one of
the Pilgrim ladies and lost. They decide to go in search of the treasure. Along the way, they find clues and
a wonderfully menacing figure dressed like a witch. The plot moves quickly, sweeping the reader along toward a
scary confrontation in the bowels of the Mayflower II. My daughter loved it, immediately choosing the
book for her book report diorama (high praise indeed). She especially enjoyed the new feature in these longer
books - a secret "26-letter message" hidden in the illustrations. I enjoyed the way the book introduced her to
the Pilgrims and to the town of Plymouth - Roy does a terrific job of using the setting as an integral part of
the mystery. For both fans of the series and new readers, Mayflower Treasure Hunt is a sure winner. |
