Meghan Rose on Stage!
Meghan Rose series

by Lori Z. Scott
Illustrated by Stacy Curtis

A fairly even-handed approach to children's dilemmas and ethics is provided by author Lori Z Scott in this debut children's novel. Although the storyline is slanted toward Christian values, it is very sensitively done, showing the ideals that children should aspire to, whether Christian or not.

Meghan Rose is a first grader, facing the traumas of a school talent show. She feels that none of her skills are worthy of a performance and, unfortunately, showing off her bottle cap collection is not considered a talent! What's a girl to do? Stacy Curtis' charming illustrations give kids a great bird's-eye view of Meghan's travails. As Meghan struggles with developing a talent, she discovers that she can be herself without being jealous of her bubble-blowing, piano-playing classmates; and that being yourself and being a good friend is one of the greatest "talents" around!

One of the great charms of this book (and the sequels coming out soon) is the Discussion Questions and Fun Activity Ideas in the back of the book. Since the book is biblically based, some of the discussion questions may not be appropriate for all families, but the lessons are sound. The idea that children can learn and understand the importance of being who you are, being a good friend, and treating others equally is a universal truth that adults can learn as well.
