Shelly Becker’s book (illustrated by Hideko Takahashi) is a delightful read which will no doubt end up in many
primary schools. The book about Gail’s inability to share when her cousin Claire comes to visit will be attractive
to teachers (and in turn to students) for two reasons: the story and illustrations are such that young students
will be drawn to it and the teacher will be able to get double use of the book. It will serve as a wonderful
outside reading, and the teacher can use it to teach character building.
The book teaches an important lesson about sharing. At first glance one may wonder why Gail didn’t share more
quickly, but Becker has used a more realistic approach and tells us that it will take Gail more than one lesson to
fully learn the idea of sharing.
Another feature of the book is the use of rhyme with every two lines. This will facilitate reading as the child
will know the sound of the ending word in the second line after he/she has read the first line.
If you have a child and this book doesn’t show up at your school, I suggest you get a copy and share it with
your child. The terrific illustrations and the humorous tale will enthrall your child so the point of the lesson
will almost be subconscious.
