Opa Finds a Miracle
by Patrick Mader
Illustrated by Andrew Holmquist
It is snowing on the farm and Oma’s grandchildren beg her to tell them a story. Oma remembers back to another
snowy day many years before. On that day, Oma’s cow, Presto, had returned to the barn, thin and sad. Oma guessed
that Presto had left a newborn calf in the far field. The search was on. Oma’s children raced out to find the calf
before it froze to death. But the calf was nowhere to be found. The children returned home empty-handed. They
worried throughout the long night and all the next day in school. Then Oma had an idea. But could she find the
tiny calf on time?
Author Patrick Mader grew up on a dairy farm. In Oma Finds a Miracle, Mader is inspired by his
experience to create a realistic scenario that draws the reader right into Oma’s world. Young readers will worry
about Presto and her newborn right along with Oma and her children.
Mader enjoys writing about characters that span several generations. His rural settings in both Oma Finds
a Miracle and in his first picture book, Opa and Oma Together (also
reviewed on Myshelf), depict the joys
and dangers of life on a farm. Aided by Andrew Holmquists’s beautiful illustrations, Mader successfully weaves
many positive messages throughout his sensitive story, including the determination and love of a mother for her
child, whether she be human or animal. Children will enjoy listening to Oma Finds a Miracle over and over
again. |
