Penny’s 4th of July:
Sleepytown Beagles book 2
by Timothy Glass
This book is the second in the Sleepytown Beagle series, with books three and four due later this year. In this
story, Ben Perry doesn’t feel like going to sleep and neither does his Beagle puppy, Panda. The two of them get
scared when they see the big oak tree outside the window moving in the wind. Ben’s two older and wiser Beagles,
Gunner and Penny explain that it’s time to pay a visit to Sleepytown, where, "Only goodness is allowed". To ease
their fears, Penny relates a story of how she got scared by 4th of July fireworks and ran away from home. After
spending a night crying under a bridge, she met a friendly Beagle who sent her off to Sleepytown and the next day
Mr. and Mrs. Perry came to get her. Somehow, Penny states the moral of the whole book, "My story has a very happy
ending, but it is never good to run away." I was confused as to how a story that seemed to be about going to
sleep turned into a quick lesson on not running away from home. The actual plot is a little disjointed. If the
author had stuck to a more concise tale about the joys of drifting off to sleep, I would have enjoyed it a lot
more. As it stands, my 7 month old daughter just loves the cover illustration, but I probably won’t read the
story with her when she’s older. |
