Jeff Shaara has written a fascinating and compelling book about the people and events leading up to the American Revolution. The story begins with the Boston Massacre in 1770 and continues to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, told from the point of view of the participants. The battles of Lexington, Bunker Hill, and the Boston Tea Party are told in dramatic detail, as is the meeting of the Continental Congress and the writing of the Declaration of Independence.

Shaara breathes life into the figures of history and makes real people of Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, Washington, et al. Shaara presents them with their idealism, their fears and struggles to attain their freedom from the corrupt government of George III..

This is the first of a two-part volume of the saga of the American Revolution; a book to be read and savored by all students of history. In fact, it should be read even by those who are not students of history. It gives the reader a fuller understanding of the events and people that forged our nation.
