A false past has Maggie Stovall descending into madness. She is haunted by a little girl's image who she feels needs her, and is the daughter she secretly gave up for adoption eight years ago. She is also losing her grip on reality, forgetting things, not being sure where she really is. The final straw is when her foster sons are removed from her care due to her growing madness. Desperate, she checks herself into a Christian mental health facility. Her husband, Ben, is baffled by all of this. He knows nothing about the child, believing that he married a virgin, as he himself was, and having no explanation for why he is losing his wife, he goes in search of answers.
Ben follows a trail of clues from the year before his marriage during which Maggie vanished. His search leads him to discover a former lover, a dangerous man who may thwart Ben's quest for Maggie's child. It is doubtful either Ben or the little girl will manage to live to find each other, each facing violent situations that threaten their lives. If all of these obstacles can be overcome, will Maggie be able to heal, and accept her family back into her life?
This is an incredible book. Poignant,
and sensitive without being preachy or sappy, it is riveting. God is a very
real presence in this book, leading the characters to make the best choices
at the right times. Maggie and Ben each make a journey of deepening faith
that is both painful and inspiring to watch, and the simple faith of a child
is such a beautiful thing to see in this day when the news would lead one to
believe our children are a lost generation. Renew your hope and joy, and
read this book.
