This fast paced adventure takes place in the final year of the Civil War at the Ohio River border between Indiana and Kentucky. This is the tale of a nearly forgotten episode: the rise of the Sons of Liberty and their attempt to turn the northwestern states into a second confederacy and end the war.

Union Major Paul Stapleton, twice wounded, and now the leader of a group of black Union soldiers that are mostly ex-slaves, becomes involved in a whirlwind love affair with a southern belle who works for the conspiracy.  Janet Todd uses him to help supply the Sons of Liberty. His commander wants him to be an intelligence agent for the Union, and to keep him informed of the plans of the conspiracy.

Loyalty is tested time and again. Love, betrayal, deceit and the horrors of war are recounted in this historical novel of a time when our country was torn apart by conflicting ideas; slavery and women's issues are explored by Fleming. Fleming's characters are well developed and the story is peppered with the real people of that era. Lincoln is shown in a less than favorable light. John Wilkes Booth joins our hero and heroine on a train ride, and is portrayed as a sort of hero of the cause.

History and Civil War buffs will enjoy this fast paced story. The ending was a surprise; not at all what I expected. This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read.
