Sterling Brooks is a passive-aggressive estate lawyer who was killed by a golf-ball to the head. Now, after waiting in the celestial waiting room for 46 years, he finally has a chance to see heaven by earning a 24-hour pass, which means he can see Annie, the woman he loved but never married out of sheer selfishness. To earn the pass, he must participate in an experiment the Council has been cooking up for some time. He has to go BACK to earth and help someone who needs it the way he should have helped people when he was alive. Can Sterling find someone and help in time for him to visit Annie in heaven on Christmas?

7-year-old Marissa loves ice-skating. It's the only thing that helps her to deal with losing her daddy and Nor-Nor (her grandma) after they left. Her greatest wish is to have both of them back for her 8th birthday, which happens to be on Christmas Eve and even asks God for help in the matter. What she doesn't realize is that strange old man she spots as she takes off her skates is the one person on earth who can help her get them back.

Eddie and Junior Badgett are going on trial for racketeering, loan-sharking, arson, and attempted murder. What's worse is that they haven't been able to find of the prosecution's key witnesses, 30-year-old rock singer, Billy Campbell, and his mother, Nor Kelly, who used to be a cabaret singer, so they could get rid of them.

This is an amazing story of love, compassion, adventure, and the triumph of love during the holidays. The characters are very well-created and the plot is unique and powerful. I love the way the story is set in New York and how the chapters lead you into surprise after surprise after surprise. Sterling Brooks is a character who is so lovable, yet so thickheaded, that you want to both hug him and kick him at the same time. I recommend this read for ANYONE who wants a different approach to the holiday spirit this Christmas.
