While the writing is earthy and simple enough for all readers, the fact still remains that this type of book has been written before. A younger man/older woman romance is a hot topic, though. Who wouldn't want a fine young lover? Mariah, the protagonist, has certainly found her soul mate in 21-year-old rookie football player Malik.

The story starts out with Mariah in a tumultuous relationship with Kareem. Mariah and her friends attend a relationship seminar in which they learn that if a man hasn't asked you to marry him by 7 years in, "Honey, he ain't asking!" Mariah takes this to heart with her relationship with Kareem. Feeling that she deserves better, she throws caution to the winds and decides that there is nothing wrong with a young suitor.

Sound like something that has been done before? Know the ending already? May December Souls is still worth the time it takes for a quick, easy read. This freshman novel has potential. The intertwining of viewpoints--the protagonists' children, the actual lovers, the girl friends and his boy--makes this a page-turner. The book is hip, provocative, mainstream and has a message of soul-searching and acceptance. I'll definitely read another book by Ms. Monteilh.
