MyShelf.Com This novel, "The Red of
His Shadow," is the fourth novel by Cuban-born author Mayra Montero.
It has been translated into English by Edith Grossman. The main character, Zul, became a Voodoo Priestess at the age of 12 when she was the only surviving member of a famous and strong voodoo family. She is anointed a mambo or priestess and must serve a seven-year apprenticeship. At the onset of the story, she is called to oversee a Gag, part of the Holy Week ceremonies for one of their most important religious holidays. As this Gag is planned Zul's life is threatened by Simil, a violent and rebellious man with whom she once had a love affair. He claims he will kill her if she will not join forces with him. Throughout this richly detailed
book, Montero paints a wonderfully dark picture. She gives rich detail
of the hard and harsh lives that the sugar cane workers live and demonstrates
how important the religious ceremonies and celebrations are to them. All
through the book the reader feels a senses of impending doom and wonders
just exactly on which side the stone is going to drop. Wonderful details
are given throughout. |
