This is a wonderful and touching story about a seventy-year-old woman, Addy Shadd, who volunteers to take care of five-year-old Sharla Cody when her mother leaves her at her doorstep. As the relationship between Addy and Sharla continues to grow, Addy remembers her own troubled childhood and the forces that made her return home.

Ms. Lansens does a wonderful job in telling Addy's story through flashbacks. The reader is not confused at all when Addy is having a flashback or going through her current stage of life. She does a wonderful job in showing the hardship that Addy had to face due to her race and how she was able overcome her obstacles. In order to overcome her obstacles, Addy had gotten stronger and through that strength, she was able to care for Sharla.

This book does a wonderful job in showing great character development and great use of flashbacks in a story. This is a truly remarkable story about love and returning back to where one feels the strongest and safest. It also does a good job in talking about race and compassion towards others.
