Showing
Mary How Women Can Share Prayers, Wisdom, and the Blessings of God By Renita J. Weems Warner Books / Walk Worthy Press - May, 2002 ISBN: 0446530662 - Inspirational Fiction / African American Reviewed by: Sharon Hudson, MyShelf.Com This book deserves a permanent place on your bookshelf. It can be read over and over again and the reader can derive new insight and guidance throughout life's journey with every reading. I wrote this review after reading one time through, but believe me when I say that I'll keep it as a handy reference. "Showing Mary" was written especially for women, using a powerful metaphor of pregnancy. The repeated references to both the physical and spiritual traits of pregnancy focus the reader to think deep within themselves. At the core of the book is the symbolism of Mary, Mother of Jesus, and the circumstances as defined in Luke 1:26-56 surrounding a virgin's introduction to womanhood through the power of the Most High overshadowing her. Pregnancy can mean more than giving physical birth to a child. Pregnancy is the strong desire to submit to the spiritual appetite to change. Therefore we are equipped with preparing oneself from within for a final outward appearance. Every aspect of a physical pregnancy was compared and contrasted to spiritual pregnancy when we think about the calling that each of us has on our lives. We may be late bloomers in exploring the call, but eventually we all heed to our need for a deeper spiritual walk with God. "Showing Mary" balanced the
lives of young Mary and her older cousin Elizabeth (John the Baptist's
mother) to the lives women, their women family members, and women friends
share today. The customs of life for women over 2000 years ago have been
colorfully bought to life and the camaraderie shared between women of
all ages through the commonalities of just being women is rewarded in
this book of prayers, wisdom and the blessings of God.
