The first thing that intrigued me about Nordberg's Thin Air is the occupation of Beth Cheng. Cheng, married to the pastor of a small church, is a wildlife biologist. She lives in Washington State with her three small children and husband Allen.

Although Allen wishes Beth didn't have to work, there's no doubt of his support from the very beginning, nor any doubt of Beth's love of her job. Thin Air opens with a typical early morning breakfast, complete with messy highchair and phone interruptions. Beth is asked to finish an assignment that will require a plane ride into the mountains, but assures her husband that she will be home before dark.

The reader will determine from the title that a plane crash is foreseeable, but Nordberg's writing abilities keep you interested nonetheless. The introduction of Dennis Doyle, a Vietnam veteran living as a recluse in the mountains gives you the opportunity to delve into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. You can feel his heartbeat as Nordberg describes him jumping at the sound of a branch breaking behind him, diving to the ground and arming himself with a small handgun kept at his waist.

The crash is described with few words, but vividly. It's the description of Beth's injuries that cause you to want to double over in agony. The emotions of her husband when he first begins to realize that his wife is late will seem familiar to all of us. Unfortunately his gut feeling only gets worse when he realizes the inevitable.

A lone survivor, Beth Cheng is forced to fight for her life. With the reluctant help from Dennis Doyle, she slowly begins to mend. Unwillingly, Doyle comes face to face with the enemy, his past, and Beth Cheng begins to wonder, in spite of Dennis Doyle, if she will ever have a future.

Thin Air will keep you guessing about the outcome until the last few pages, always a plus to any reader.
