Walk a mile in another's high heels.
Jakes
knows God, but does he know women and what they go through well
enough to write about it? Well, he comes pretty close. Jakes shares
this inspirational story in a way that garners responses of laughter,
tears, head shaking and "oh girl, did you hear that?"
neck gyrating. All working women should pick up Cover Girls.
Cover
Girls starts off with a touch of humor as Camille and Tonya
get into an office conflict. The scene helps to set up the characters
and the story, which is about women and how they handle their lives.
T.D. Jakes's goal here is to show women that they each have a story;
they each have a burden heavier than their own shoulders; and they
all need to show more compassion for one another.
The
dueling office workers are guided into a lunch meeting by another
coworker. They eventually agree to continue their honest, revealing
conversations over future lunches. It's here their angry boss overhears
one of their conversations and calls them into her office for a
meeting, which is actually a trap. Will this office survive these
ladies? Will they reveal their true selves and entrust each other
or quit and bitterly move on?
I'm
not sure what I expected in Cover Girls, but what I got was
a plausible story with well developed, stirring characters. Jakes
brings his faith, which is non-denominational, full gospel, into
his writing. As an author, he gives us humor, truth, and honest
guidance minus the bible thumping judgment. It's quite refreshing.
The
reader of Time Warner's audio book version is actress Pamala Tyson.
Tyson successfully brings Jakes's eclectic group of ladies to life.
