The
Glorious Cause
By Jeff
Shaara
In The
Glorious Cause, Jeff Shaara continues the saga of the beginning
of our nation.
The
story is told from the point of view of Washington, Cornwallis,
Franklin, Nathaniel Greene, Lafayette, Howe, Morgan, and Benedict
Arnold.
The
journey begins with the Battle of Bunker Hill and continues through
the tortuous and bloody years to the final surrender by the British
at Yorktown.
Among
many events there is the fateful victory on Christmas Day at
Trenton; the Battle at Fort Ticonderoga; the bitter winter at Valley
Forge; the delicate diplomatic endeavors of Franklin with the French.
All are told in powerful narration, which gives the reader the feeling
of experiencing the despairs and the triumphs of the men who were
struggling to bring their dream of independence to fulfillment.
This
is a volume which, with its companion, Rise to Rebellion,
should be required reading for all history students. In fact, it
should be a "must read" for all Americans. It would give
them an understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices that were
made that we might have the freedom we now enjoy.
