Homecourt Advantage
By Rita Ewing and
Crystal McCrary Anthony
Homecourt
Advantage
is tasty junk food reading with the naughty allure of catty gossip
about professional athletes and their wives -- a subject the authors
know well since they are (or were) wives of professional basketball
players. Somewhere around the hundredth page, you’ll begin
to guess where the book might be going -- well, you’re right.
You’ll find no surprises anywhere in this plot. The underlying
message of the novel is that basketball wives and girlfriends are
almost all noble (albeit a tad self-involved) and professional athletes
are dogs (and profoundly self-involved). It’s a theme we don’t
have much trouble accepting so the book makes a pleasant vacation
read -- like getting your soap opera fix in a book. Here’s
a hint I gleaned from the book -- if you’re considering getting
involved with a professional athlete -- stick with the religious
guys. This is the first co-author outing for the writing team of
Rita Ewing (the former wife of Patrick Ewing) and Crystal McCrary
Anthony (wife of Greg Anthony) and they have a bit of the first-time
fumbling you can expect in celebrity authors. Since they are both
intelligent professional women, so I’m sure their next book
will combine the pepper with a little more mature seasoning.
