Light on Snow
By
Anita Shreve Read by Alyson Silverman
“Accidents and intercepting
footsteps” are the divine forces in Shreve’s latest
novel.
Near
their country home, in Shepherd, New Hampshire, Nicky Dillon and
her father go for a walk. Their footsteps lead them to an abandoned
infant, just minutes old. When they rush the baby to the hospital,
they meet up with Detective Warren. The Detective shares the results
of the case with Robert Dillion. Robert left a successful job to
make a living as a carpenter. In his secluded home he lives with
his grief and his only daughter. Suddenly he has a detective and
others knocking on his door, wanting his help. He just wants to
be left alone.
Telling
the story in first person is a mature speaking, thirty-something
Nicky who takes readers back to when she was twelve. Nicky wants
to keep baby Doris, but her dad doesn’t. Nicky likes school
and people. She’s ready to let others in, whereas her father
isn’t. As an adult looking back Nicky is honest about the
conflicts with her father, but as a child and an adult she never
loses respect for him. Nicky comes of age, more or less, during
this time. She learns some life-altering lessons about relationships,
wisdom and reasoning.
Shreve
has penned many novels. Her pragmatic characters and storytelling
are the keys to her readership. Light on Snow takes place in December,
during the holiday season. It’s a touching winter read aimed
at warming one’s heart - and it does.
Actress
Alyson Silverman reads Light on Snow. “Sex and the
City,” “Hebrew Hammer,” and “Garmento”
as just some of her TV and film credits. Silverman’s level,
young voice speaks to the listeners, gently sharing Nicky, Robert
and baby Doris’ story.
