A Taste of Reality
By Kimberla Lawson Roby

On the outside, Anise appears to be a put-together African-American female who has the great career, fantastic marriage, and friends who share everything. Unfortunately, everything in Anise's life is not as great as it appears. Anise gets passed over for a promotion…again, and it is given to a white colleague who is not qualified for the job. Anise's husband and their marriage are not as fantastic as Anise thought it was, and her best friend is not sharing everything like she used to. Can Anise remain strong and get over these humps in her life or will she succumb to them?

Ms. Roby allows the reader to feel for Anise no matter the color of her skin. Anyone could relate to Anise's struggles with marriage, job, and friends. A Taste of Reality reaches in and grabs onto readers' mind and have them think about how they would be able to handle the difficulties that Anise faces. The characterization of Anise appears to be real and with substance. How Anise attempts to overcome her obstacles shows how strong a person can truly be, and what goals she will continue to strive for no matter what the obstacle is.
