What
a Girl Wants
By Liz Maverick
What
a Girl Wants introduces readers to Hayley Jane Smith and her
three friends, Diane, Audra, and Suz. Hayley is experiencing what
many women go through: trying to strike the right balance between
work, friendship, and finding the right man to spend the rest of
her life with. These women have several disagreements, share drinks
and funny moments with each other, similar to the popular “Sex
in the City” TV series.
Ms.
Maverick does a great job involving the reader with her characters.
At one point, this reader wanted to reach into the pages and slap
the women in this novel for their continuous fights and disagreements.
The characterizations of Hayley, Diane, Audra, and Suz depict several
different female stereotypes, and Ms. Maverick has those stereotypes
down to a science. Their friendships show depth: these women have
been through a lot together. Ms. Maverick demonstrates that true
friendships are more important than any romantic relationship.
What a Girl Wants is a well-written,
well-characterized portrayal of some types of women in today's society.
