Cover the Butter
By Carrie Kabak
Kate Cadogan has finally reached the end of her rope.
For her first quarter century, her micromanaging mother has manipulated almost every facet of Kate's life. Her self-esteem, her friendships and her career have all suffered under her mother's control. Kate manages to loosen the reins for a while, but the heartbreak of a cheating mate and a miscarriage thrust her right back under her mother's thumb.
Kate's solution is to marry a financially stable but emotionally barren man. Her husband devotes his passion to sports; all Kate gets is some bizarre Saturday night sex—and that's quite enough. During their eighteen years together, Kate makes the best of the loveless marriage by dedicating herself to their son, the house and the garden.
Fortunately, Kate's son grows up, and the time has at last come for her to take a good look at her life. What does she really want? How can she get it? Which ties will she break in order to really start living?
Cover the Butter is a bittersweet story of one woman's journey to self-discovery and eventual fulfillment. Heartrending situations and wacky characters—Kate's in-laws literally take the cake—help to make this novel entertaining. The well-written reminders of the seventies and eighties add a wonderfully nostalgic touch. Author Kabak lays a strong foundation for the protagonist's desperation to do more than exist. Though the meek shall become heir to the earth, this heroine took a tad too long to be disinherited. Nonetheless, Cover the Butter is a stress-free way to pass a few rainy afternoons |
