Downtown

By Anne Rivers Siddons

Smoky O'Donnell has just moved out of her religious and sheltered life and entered the world of Atlanta, Georgia and the magazine industry during the 1960's. Smoky has several of her values challenged and is given new insight to the changing world. Smoky is challenged not only with her personal views but also in her field. Can Smoky handle the changes in her New World? Will she be able to entertain her family's values and morals?

Anne Rivers Siddons has done a fantastic job in creating a strong character in Smoky O'Donnell. She has personified Smoky to show the environment that Smoky grew up in and the changes that Smoky has to make due to events and change of scenery. Since Downtown deals with Atlanta in the 1960's, this type of novel could not take place in just any city or just any time period. Smoky's experience with her job as a magazine writer and the characters that she ends up working with show the depth of Anne Rivers Siddons abilities to create meaningful lead and support characters.

Downtown is a truly enjoyable read and any fan of Anne Rivers Siddons will not be disappointed.
