Soul Matters

by Yolanda Tonette Sanders

To family and friends, young newlywed Wendy Phillips has it all. Her rich and charming husband Kevin gives her the best of the material world. She teaches not out of necessity, but because she loves children. Now the couple is expecting their first child. Wendy, a church-going woman, believes her life is blessed.

Wendy's idyllic life slowly twists out of control and away from God. She receives disturbing news from her doctor while she is pregnant. Convinced that her husband has committed adultery, Wendy questions the sanctity of marriage. Anger causes her to turn away her husband, her family, and most importantly, God. Wendy secretly plans for a divorce and an abortion. Wendy's pain grows to a place that she cannot hear Kevin's explanations or her own logic. Her mother, sister, and grandmother accidentally find out pieces of Wendy's adversities. Her sister, Kim, tries to reason with Wendy and to convince her of God's love. But Wendy reaches out to sins to ease her pain, anger, and grief. She tries to maintain a semblance of her old life so the hard questions can remained unanswered. Does Kevin admit to his own sins? Can Wendy find her way back to God, to happiness, and to a righteous life?

In Soul Matters, Yolanda Tonette Sanders portrays real adversity in marriage and family with an amazing spirituality. Ms. Sanders shows characters that become tangled in different agendas, varying spirituality, and tremendous pain and joy. The storyline involves Christianity, but I know that people of various religions will enjoy the book. A bonus includes the discussion questions at the end of the book. I love the book for its complex characters and a twisting storyline that kept me laughing, crying, and guessing. I highly recommend Soul Matters as a book that will move your heart.
