Adriane on the Edge

by Paul Mandelbau

Adriane Gelki is bored with her life. She wants to walk on the wild side but doesn’t quite know how. Her friend Joan suggests that she write a personal ad as a way to get started. While trying to figure out how to write a good ad, Adriane reads one describing a woman who embodies everything Adriane wants to be. She replies and a meeting is arranged

When she and Shelley meet, Adriane discovers that Shelley is in a wheelchair. Adriane feels cheated. It’s just not fair. A disabled person can’t be so self-confident and cool.

Shelley proves Adriane wrong. Shelley talks her into flashing a guy who turns out to be an undercover cop. And off to jail Adriane goes.

Part of Adriane’s sentence is that she see a shrink. One who she bores to death... literally!

And so goes Adriane’s experience as a free spirit.

Men come and go and so do fights with Adriane’s friends. The only constant in Adriane’s life is her dog, Barry.

This odd book spans four years in the life of a young, single woman living in Baltimore, Maryland. It strives to be funny and sometimes succeeds. Although the main character was someone I liked and would have enjoyed getting to know better, mostly the book just left me feeling sad.
