Candlewood Lake
by Penny C. Sansevieri
From the very first page this was a sweet, compelling and sometimes heartbreaking story.
Eve is a young girl in 1971 when her family moves to Connecticut and the Candlewood Lake
area of New Fairfield. Set in a place and time anyone who has been there will recognize,
Eve meets two boys, Billy and Justin, who will become her best friends. The trio will go
from children to teens to adulthood together. Billy is the jock of the bunch and adores
the attention while Justin is the book smart one who read Hemingway as a teenager. Eve
loves them both in different ways but will gravitate to where she feels that she's needed
the most.
Eve will eventually marry one of her childhood friends but tries to hang on to the other
in the process. Secrets eventually wear on their relationships along with tragedy. Trying
to keep the friendships intact will leave one of them alone in another part of the country
while trying to give Eve room to make her marriage work. Tragedy will bring them all together
again but can the friendships survive when the secrets are revealed?
This was a hard book to put down. The hope for happiness for Eve and Billy and Justin
after everything they have gone through will keep you turning the pages. Growing up isn't
always easy. |
