Cracked Pomegranate
My Birthday was When the Pomegranates Grew Ripe
by Fae Bidgoli
In Cracked Pomegranate, thirty years separate the childhoods of Fatima and Mina.
Both girls experience women’s oppression in their village of Abadi. Fati’s life twists
irrevocably with one fateful incident. Fati’s attempted rape does more than shake her
spirit: the crime punishes the victim by stoning. Fati escapes into hiding and into
non-existence. Unlike Fati, Mina does not want to marry young. She dreams of continuing
her education, which is not allowed for Abadi girls. Both Fati and Mina struggle against
family, friends, and religious leaders for a piece of their dream.
Thirteen-year old Fatima is happily engaged. Unlike some teenage girls, she is in love
with her husband-to-be, Albortz. Before they live together as husband and wife, Fati is
the victim of a rape attempt. The extreme religious leaders call for her stoning. Her
life with Albortz now impossible, Fati escapes the village with a family friend. Life
can no longer include her husband, her parents, or the possibility of children. Is escaping
death enough for a young woman wanting life’s joys?
Thirty years later, Mina approaches thirteen and dreads the expected marriage proposals.
She prays for a way to finish high school. Her father refuses Mina’s pleas because she would
be too old for marriage at age eighteen. Her answered prayers come with a visit from her
aunt and uncle. Mina’s uncle, the governor of Tehran, offers her an opportunity -a place
to live so she can finish her education. Mina’s dreams clash with the different cultural
roles in Tehran. Will Mina be able to adapt to women’s roles? Will she fulfill her dream
of higher education?
Bidgoli captures a story of love, friendship, and faith in Cracked Pomegranate.
Her inter-generational characters cross cultures and religions. I am familiar with this
culture and religion, and this story tugged at my heart. I cried for injustices and judgments
that twisted lives. I rejoiced at the kindness and generosity that fueled dreams.
Cracked Pomegranate is a heart-wrenching tale of courageous women who struggle against
society’s norms to reach personal fulfillment. Find a cozy place to read; you’ll want
to travel this journey in one sitting! |
