Fortunate Son

by Walter Mosley
Read by Lorraine Toussaint

A beautiful tale of two boys of different color, brought together by an unfortunate twist of fate, and held together with love and devotion.  Walter Mosley stuns the reader when one of the main characters (Branwyn) dies  only a few minutes in.  She leaves behind her child, Tommy, who has been enveloped in a life of luxury, generously given by her heartbroken partner, a heart surgeon.  The abusive natural father of Tommy rips the boy from all he's ever known and forces him into a lifestyle that isn’t suitable for any child.  Meanwhile, brother Eric suffers problems related to growing up in a world of excess.

Walter Mosley's tale of two boys growing up in different worlds is warm and holds your interest from the beginning.  The reader feels the pain of Tommy, who eventually adapts and to his difficult circumstances, and eventually overcomes them. At the same time, you’ll feel frustration for Eric, who is seemingly handed life on a silver platter.

The audio version is read in warm, dulcet tones by Lorraine Toussaint.  The accents she captures are authentic and emotion creeps through the words as the story unfolds.

I loved this book.  Although not specifically set in this era, growing up in the 60's in the south, I witnessed much of the racial tensions that were rampant during that time. Tommy was not immune to some of those same struggles, and I truly cheered that he was able to overcome his problems and grow into such a wonderful man, reuniting with Eric who was always in his heart.
