If Only I Could
by Greg Sarwa
John Kadel lives in an indigent nursing home. (This story takes place in Poland -- the nursing home is not like the
nursing homes we are familiar with). John doesn't expect much from life; he reads a lot and plays chess with his
neighbor. He walks in the park; he tries to forget his past and the love that he lost. John is a secretive man...
no one knows much about him except that he never married and has no family.
When his doctor lets John know that he has incurable cancer, well, that's just the way fate is... until he is
accidentally knocked to the sidewalk by a lady who is in a hurry. It turns out to be Agatha, the lost love of his
youth.
Agatha is single again, and she and John begin to re-kindle the feelings they once had for each other. Agatha is
an active grandmother but she is anxious to include John in her life. This romantic story is told in alternating
chapters; what happened when they were young and what happens now. It reminds us that life is short and should
be lived to it's fullest. It also reminds us that maybe it's never too late and makes us think of our own lost
chances. If Only I Could is a short book that has sympathetic characters and a simple plot, but it's a
soul-touching story that you will never forget. |
