It Might Have Been What He Said
by Eden Collinsworth
Isabel and James. What happens when their worlds intersect? Isabel is from a long line of mentally unstable women. It
doesn't seem apparent in her own life since Isabel is smart, stable and considered brilliant in the literary world.
James is from a rather odd family where the way to obtain money without actually working for it is the main motivation
in life. Isabel and James meet when she’s interested in some of his work. Hoping to convince him to write a book she
can publish, they have a disastrous first meeting. James being the womanizer he is decides he'd like to conquer this
woman and then sets them up for a second meeting which fares much better.
For a while they bring out the best in each other leading to marriage and a son. James true nature eventually causes
the breakdown of the marriage. At one point when the marriage begins to fail, Isabel tries to kill James. When her
psychiatrist asks her why, her response is "It might have been what he said."
A fascinating read with a look into the stigma of mental illness that haunts Isabel’s life. Overshadowed lives not
always controlled by the past but seemingly a great predictor of the future. |
