The Mission Song
by John le Carré
Read By David Oyelowo
The twentieth novel of John Le Carré, acclaimed author of The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, leads us
into the struggles of the mixed race Salvo, whom the story features. His parents were a missionary priest and a
Congolese woman, which forces him to be secreted away to school, where he perfects learning and translating
African tribal languages. Salvo's mentor, a Catholic Brother in a school for sons of wayward priests, offers love
in addition to training. After finishing his studies, which transform him from a mere translator into a polished
but vain interpreter, he moves to England and is quickly rewarded byfor a place near the top of his profession.
Marrying a white woman and spurning her for an affair with a Congolese woman in London merely provides a side
show to the main event, Salvo's involvement with the British Secret Service. Le Carré's plot and character
development will take you on a ride you'll treasure for every minute. The story is read dramatically by David
Oyelowo, the actor well known for television roles in Spooks, As Time Goes By, film roles in As
You Like It, A Sound of Thunder and in The Royal Shakespeare Company production of Henry VI. This
is one of the best fictional blends of comic moments, love stories, thriller and glimpses of corporations at their
worst. |
