Monterey Shorts 2
More on the Line - Second short story collection

by Chris Kemp, Byron Merritt, and Ken Jones, eds.

Monterey Shorts 2: More on the Line is the second short fiction collection by the Fiction Writers of the Monterey Peninsula. This collective of ten writers has produced twenty stories, two per author, that offer the atmosphere and color of the Monterey Peninsula in California. Some of the stories deal with legends; some deal with new adventures; all portray the country that the authors love so well. Here is where John Steinbeck created and Henry Miller and Robinson Jeffers added their efforts. Today, the region still attracts authors, as well as artists and artisans. It is no wonder then that these ten authors found each other and formed the Fiction Writers of the Monterey Peninsula for support and encouragement. This volume, like its predecessor, is the result of individual writing and collective criticism. To take the next step and print these efforts is not only a gutsy thing for these authors to do, but a gracious gift to us readers as well.

Inside these pages are twenty unique stories. For example, Chris Kemp offers a warped look at time travel. Linda Price tells a tale about a jellyfish-spined widow who develops some backbone. Ken Jones presents a recasting of the story of the first woman lighthouse keeper on the Pacific Coast. Each story is well crafted, with interesting, fully-developed characters. There are even unexpected plot twists. The writing styles are varied, from straight narrative to cinematic vignettes. Monterey Shorts 2: More on the Line is a delightful collection of stories to dip into or read from the beginning, one after another. It’s a sure thing that you’ll be very pleasantly surprised by your excursion into Monterey.
