My Life on Mars

by Alicia Metcalf Miller

Eliza White should be at the happiest point in her life. She is a successful illustrator and author for a set of children's books. Her children are healthy, well adjusted and the youngest has just entered college and her husband has a successful business. So why the restlessness?

When Eliza's aging and widowed mother calls with the news that a close neighbor has passed away Eliza is sympathetic. Her mother has decided to sell the family homne and move to Santa Fe to be closer to the grandchildren she dearly loves.

Eliza is in the midst of a writer's block, suspects her husband is once again cheating and is experiencing empty nest in the worst way. She jumps at the chance to go and help her mother pack the house and escape her own problems for a while.

While packing her mother's home she discovers a secret that changes the way she views her father, who was very distant during her childhood, and the way her mother dealt with life in general. She also meets a younger man who has her reevaluating the way she has chosen to live her life.

I enjoyed this book, although it was not a mystery, which is usually my genre of choice. There was a mystery involved but the history of Eliza's past and the unfolding of her future was so well told I did not mind. I would recommend this book to anyone who is approaching that mid-point in life where things are so confusing.
