The Other Woman
by Jane Green
You know you either know someone with a monster of a mother-in-law or you have one yourself. This book delves into
the relationship between Ellie and Dan... and Dan's mother, Linda. The Other Woman is Dan's mother. She means
well, but she is controlling, demanding, and possessive of her son, calling a couple of times a day. Jane Green's
smart and real-life story is one that I won't soon forget. I was ready to scream at loud at a character, who is not
even real. You really start to feel for Ellie and what she's going through. Who wants to be told what she wants? I
can't think of anyone. Ellie's ideal wedding is changed, of course by Linda. Ellie and Dan get pregnant and who
goes overboard but Linda.
But after an accident with their son Tom while Dan's parents were watching the baby, Ellie practically severs
all ties with her mother-in-law. Her relationship with Dan (who doesn't really do anything about the rifts between
the two important women in his life) is strained to the point that he moves out and into his parent's house. After
experiencing life as a single mom, apologizing to everyone it seems, Ellie experiences what the true meaning of
family is. If you love someone, you still love them no matter what. |
