Paint it Black
by Janet Fitch
Read By Jennifer Jason Leigh
Janet Fitch's follow-up novel to her hit, White Oleander, featured on Oprah's Book Club, is a psychodrama
you won't want to miss. The story is set in Los Angeles, where naive, time-warped punker Josie Tyrell finds honest
love in self-loathing artist Michael Faraday, transplanted from an east coast erudite world. Together they experience
the depths of life on the edge, then it accelerates when Michael is found dead. Josie, in seeking the roots of his
death, joins forces with an unlikely ally, his mother.
Jennifer Jason Leigh, actor in films and stage and an award winning director, captures beautifully the personas
that Fitch creates. One of my favorite chapters focuses on the meeting of Michael's mother Meredith and Josie, with
overwhelming grief driving their unlikely relationship and resulting emotional dance. Josie, knowing Michael in ways
Meredith never would, coupled with a reluctance to admit their relationship had more than a couple of fault lines,
slowly unleashes their complex world to Meredith. The sobering cause of Michael's death binds and surrounds this
unpredictable, raw and excellent second book for Fitch. |
